6 Smart Ways to Help Kids Build Healthy Habits

Physical activity plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing our health. At FluidStance, our mission is to get the world moving, and we’re always exploring ways to incorporate more movement into daily life. Regular physical activity not only supports physical and mental well-being but also enhances children’s cognitive abilities and academic performance.

So why aren’t kids moving enough?

According to Juliet Starrett, a parent and cofounder of San Francisco Crossfit, “We estimate that kids today are spending 85 to 90% of their waking hours sitting—at school, doing homework, commuting, and in front of screens—which negatively impacts their bodies and minds.”

Starrett is among many parents advocating for standing desks and active learning environments in schools. While these are great initiatives, there’s plenty we can do at home to model and encourage healthy behaviors:

As children grow older, it’s easy to relax screen time rules, especially during school breaks. To prevent inactivity, set mini-movement goals for every 15 minutes of TV—like 5 push-ups or 15 jumping jacks. Join in to reinforce the habit.

If you live near school or local spots like parks or community centers, consider organizing a walking or biking group with other parents. Turning the commute into a social activity makes it more enjoyable and less of a chore for kids. Plus, it’s a great way for you to hit your own step goals.

For kids who are less inclined to be active, after-school programs or summer camps can provide a fun and engaging environment. These settings offer opportunities to try new activities, make friends, and discover new passions.

While handing over a tablet or phone can be convenient, extended screen time often leads to prolonged inactivity. Encourage subtle movement during screen time by using tools like a yoga ball or a FluidStance Level to keep kids gently active while they play.

Getting a family dog can be a fun way to introduce daily exercise. Assign your kids the task of walking the dog for at least 30 minutes a day. Better yet, make it a family routine—you’ll all benefit from the activity and the conversations that come with it.

When kids see us prioritizing physical activity and health, they’re more likely to follow suit. Whether it’s evening walks, joining a sports league, or trying out a new hobby like rock climbing or surfing, showing that you value wellness sets a powerful example.

Swimming is another fantastic way to stay active without it feeling like a workout. Whether through professional lessons or teaching them yourself, it’s a fun and effective way to keep kids moving.
