Glamour Meets Activism: Prabal Gurung’s Vision for Spring 2025 at NYFW

At New York Fashion Week, Prabal Gurung’s runway came alive with flowing chiffon and silk ensembles, set to the backdrop of a live orchestra. The Nepalese-American designer used his ‘Holi Hope’ show at 1 Centre St. to make a bold political statement, wearing a shirt emblazoned with the word VOTE in the vivid palette of his Spring 2025 collection—an emblem of optimism and forward-looking spirit.

Gurung revealed that the Indian festival Holi, known for its exuberance and unity, served as the muse for his designs. The unexpected announcement of Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee further fueled his desire to infuse the collection with hope and joy. This sentiment radiated through his use of soft, glowing colors suited for both day and night.

The collection exuded freshness and charm. A standout look featured an ocean blue blazer over a multicolored embellished dress, accented by a white silk scarf fluttering in the breeze. Variations of blue reappeared in asymmetrical shorts paired with pastel tops and blazers. Gurung also played with texture, presenting tops adorned with hand-dyed mohair flowers that added a tactile, artistic flair.

Diversity was a cornerstone of the show, with a cast that reflected the ongoing push for inclusivity in fashion. This commitment to representation deepened the impact of his work. Gurung’s evening wear also shone, particularly a striking red bandage halter dress with pink silk ruffles and gold metallic accents in floor-length gowns.

Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2025 collection was a harmonious blend of serenity and urgency, using fashion as a call to action. By encouraging civic engagement and championing inclusivity, he reaffirmed the transformative power of style in shaping a more hopeful and equitable world.
