Exercise doesn’t have to be confined to the gym or your living room. Some of the most enjoyable and fulfilling workouts happen when you’re outside with friends!
Take last weekend, for example—we joined The Color Vibe 5K. I’ll be honest: I’m not a runner. I actually dislike running and rarely do it. While I know it’s great for cardiovascular health, I usually prefer circuit training. But I ran the 5K anyway!
And you know what? It was a blast and a solid workout. My calves are still sore (yes, I’m being dramatic). Many people dream of running a 5K, 10K, half marathon, or even a full marathon but don’t know where to begin.
If I can do it, so can you. Running a 5K is totally achievable—and fun! The key is to just get started.
Stop telling yourself, “I’ll do one next year; it’s too late to train now.” That’s nonsense. It’s never too late to begin.
If you’re currently inactive, start with a walking routine to build your endurance. Begin with 30 minutes a day and work up to 45 minutes, five days a week—or even daily. Getting your blood flowing every day is always a good idea!
Transitioning from walking to running a 5K is a challenge, but it’s doable. One of the best tools I’ve found is the Couch to 5K (C25K) app. It’s free and has helped many of my clients and friends get back into fitness and lead healthier lives.
The app guides you from a sedentary lifestyle to being 5K-ready in just two months. Even if you don’t plan to run a 5K, it’s a great way to get in shape. There’s also a paid upgrade that helps you train for a 10K.
If you’re aiming for longer distances, there are plenty of online resources to help you plan your training.
And if you’re nervous about your first 5K, consider a color run. They’re relaxed, fun, and include breaks at color stations—making for a memorable experience.
A color run might be the perfect way to kick off your running journey.
Whatever you do, keep your training fun and exciting. Step out of your comfort zone—or color zone—and try something new. You might just love it!
