Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s visionary Creative Director, delivered a captivating showcase at Paris Fashion Week, unveiling a Fall 2024 collection deeply rooted in his Bordeaux upbringing. Since taking the helm in 2011 at just 25, this marks his first homage to the famed French wine region where he was raised by his adoptive mother, Lydia Rousteing. The collection mirrors his evolution as a designer—matured and refined like a vintage wine.
Grapes took center stage, appearing in rich reds and purples across sleek monochrome ensembles, intricately embroidered on garments, and even adorning accessories like earrings and picnic baskets—an opulent ode to vineyard life.
Rousteing drew heavily from childhood memories, especially picnics with his mother, who favored trench coats and gingham blankets. This nostalgia surfaced in the collection’s black-and-white plaid patterns, seen on flowing maxi dresses and off-shoulder silhouettes entwined with delicate white grape vines.
Reimagining his mother’s classic trench, Rousteing introduced exaggerated lapels, looped sleeves, and gold snail buttons on the shoulders. The snail motif echoed throughout the line, appearing in gilded tops, sculptural earrings, and statement belts, adding whimsical sophistication.
With meticulous craftsmanship and heartfelt storytelling, Rousteing’s Bordeaux-inspired collection stood out as a highlight of Paris Fashion Week.
