Heading to Basel this week? Don’t miss Brent Estabrook, the Los Angeles-based artist known for his vibrant oil paintings of stuffed animals. He’ll be painting live at the Maddox booth AM219 on Thursday and Friday, offering a rare glimpse into his creative process.
What can visitors expect from Estabrook’s showcase this year? He’s unveiling 12 works from his whimsical “cRaZy stuFFed aniMAL” series, along with a standout piece from his “Quilt!” collection titled “A Little Overwhelmed”—a self-portrait capturing the chaos of creative overflow. Other highlights include the confetti-filled “After Party,” the endearing “I LUV U,” and the debut of “Adventure Time,” another “Quilt!” series addition.
Live painting sessions will run from 11 am to 2 pm on both Thursday and Friday. Estabrook plans to improvise his subjects, though he hints a bear might make an appearance. He thrives on the energy of live audiences, enjoying the chance to inspire and connect with visitors as they witness the artistic process firsthand.
Though he holds a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Louisville and is licensed in California, Estabrook never practiced dentistry. Instead, he followed his passion for painting, a decision he ranks just behind marrying his wife, Tara. He encourages others to take risks and pursue what they love.
His dental training still influences his art—particularly in his meticulous setup and clean technique, reminiscent of a dentist’s precision. This attention to detail will be on full display at Art Miami.
What excites Estabrook most about Basel Miami? Reuniting with fellow creatives, sharing stories, and enjoying spontaneous dinners with friends old and new. The art, the people, and the energy all fuel his inspiration, making Basel a highlight of his year.
