Nearly four decades after Oprah Winfrey’s unforgettable improvised lines in Steven Spielberg’s original “The Color Purple,” the beloved story returns as a musical, with Winfrey as Executive Producer alongside Film Producer Scott Sanders. The reimagined film is set to premiere on Christmas Day.
The star-studded cast includes Fantasia Barrino as Celie Johnson, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, and Danielle Brooks as Sofia. While all have impressed during the press tour, Oprah has captivated audiences with her regal purple fashion choices.
At a screening held at the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington, DC, Oprah stunned in a grape-hued Stella McCartney three-piece suit made from recycled lurex brocade, part of the designer’s Summer ’24 line, highlighting Oprah’s recent weight transformation.
Another memorable look featured a velvet Lela Rose suit in deep purple, complemented by a plum silk blouse and violet eyeshadow. At the 2023 Academy Museum Gala, she wore a custom sequined Dolce & Gabbana gown in purple, where she received the Pillar Award. She continued her shimmering streak at the Empire State Building premiere in New York, wearing a purple ombre Oscar De La Renta coat over a lavender silk Adam Lippes top and flared trousers.
Sharing her enthusiasm, Oprah said, “It is celebratory, it’s about hope, it’s about rejoicing, it’s about empowerment, it’s about joy and we are excited that the world gets to see it and experience it on Christmas Day.”
Tyler Perry also embraced the theme in a purple suit at the Los Angeles premiere. Sherri Shepherd joined in with a grey ‘Oprah’ sweatshirt, purple plaid skirt, and a bold violet belt. Oprah remained on-theme in an orchid Bottega Veneta turtleneck and a leather high-low skirt.
Her commitment to honoring “The Color Purple” through fashion is striking. Oprah has elevated the color to new heights, exuding elegance and grace in every appearance.
